  2. Mix cocoa powder with hot water; set aside.
  3. Whisk together flour and baking powder in a bowl.

  5. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Gradually incorporate flour mixture and milk alternately into the butter mixture, starting and ending with flour.
  7. Divide batter into three portions; mix one with cocoa mixture for chocolate layer.
  8. Pour layers into prepared pan and bake for about 60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
