  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup plain whole milk Greek yogurt
  • 23 drops red food coloring (optional)
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup plain whole milk Greek yogurt, at room temperature
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp black cocoa powder (or more regular cocoa powder)
  • 1 tsp instant espresso (optional)
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Prepare each cake layer separately by creaming butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time along with the respective flavoring ingredients.
  3. Gradually mix in dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk until just combined for each layer.
