- 750g ground beef
- 1.2kg potatoes
- 165ml warm milk
- 30g butter (for mash)
- 20g grated parmesan
- 500ml beef stock
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Fresh thyme and bay leaves
- 1.5 tbsp olive oil
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 carrot, finely chopped
- 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
- 40g all-purpose flour
- 55g tomato paste
- 125ml red wine (or sub stock + balsamic)
- 1 bouillon cube
- 1 tsp dried thyme or 3 sprigs fresh
- 2 bay leaves
- Salt + pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet and sauté minced garlic, carrot, and celery until softened.
- Add ground beef, browning it thoroughly while breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
- Stir in flour and tomato paste before gradually adding red wine (or stock + balsamic), beef stock, bouillon cube, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, bay leaves, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 30 minutes.
- Boil peeled and cubed potatoes until soft; drain and mash with warm milk, butter, and salt until creamy.
- Remove bay leaves from the filling and transfer it to a baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes over the top and sprinkle with parmesan.
- Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
